Hello,

I'm a long time owner of a Porshce 924S that needs some TLC. It's actually in decent shape considering I'm not a mechanic or know much about cars. I'm looking to turn it around, I actually almost sold it but I'm just way too attached to it. I live in Long Island, NY and looking for a good Porsche tuner to help me get it back in shape. I have a leaky gas tank, my engine needs new spark plugs and timing, and I have many other minor things that will probably uncover major things ; (. Once I get it back up and running well I want to slowly plan some additional tuning for some autocross and maybe some tarmac rally once I get some racing lessons . If I seem to have the skill I always wanted to try drifting which will require some more advanced tuning and I actually think the car is well tailored for it (will probably swap the engine at some point and try to stay porsche).

Here's a link to my almost sale ad:
http://www.geslani.com/porsche/ <-- I just couldn't sell Lulu

NJ, CT, and PA close to NY wouldn't be so bad either for a tuner / mechanic.

Thanks ahead of time,
Alex

Drifting isnt really suited to the 924, they like to stick to the track more than they like to slide around it...

for a tuner, try s&m motorsports in new hyde park..havent talked to them in a few years, but assuming theyre still there, you cant get much better than them, awesome shop....

Eric: Thanks man, I see them in the yellow pages and will give them a shout (They're actually on the same road my wife works at =). I'm looking forward to meeting those guys. Anyone in particular I should be talking to in regards to a 924? As for drifting as long as it's rear wheel and front engine a good tuner some power the right suspension and a good driver should get it sideways. I may need to shift that 50/50 balance a tad .

Dan: Like all new things I guess people don't take it seriously. Ever since I was a little kid I've always wanted to drive cars like I do my RC Cars. They made a sport out of burning rubber and going sideways, it really appeals to me and looks like a lot of fun. It may not be as competative as other motorsports but I would imagine it's very difficult to do correctly (driving skill, tuning skill). To each his own .

A guy named Sunnai (sunny) owns the place, and hopefully peter is still there (head porsche mechanic, factory trained, good guy!) they always treated me well, they replaced my engine when i had my 87 924s auto, and worked on 78 a few times..never had to go back twice on the same repair, and they were very reasonable . i dont know their current state of affairs, as ive been in fl for the past four years..but they were really good then..tell em the guy with the pink 924 says hi! (its really not pink, but thats what everyone called it)

Thanks again everyone for helping me get started. I'm really looking forward to bringing this car back to life come spring. I'm also getting into videography so whatever modifications, updates, and repairs I get done to the car I'll try to document and I'm going to create a site for it. I'll do my best to share the knowledge I get. Sites like these are a great help, I'll contribute with that.

Thanks again ..

Has the timing belt ever been replaced?

I'm not sure to be honest, this used to be my mothers car. I recieved the car about 1996 and my father continued to take care of oil changes and maintenance until 2000 when I moved into a house.

I would not start the car again. Have it towed to someone who can do a "front service".

If the timing belt breaks, your motor will be toast.

Here's a good thread to read, note especially the reply from Gohim.

Thank you so much for that tip Paul. I'm definately going to take your advice and the thread was very informative. I actually want a clean start from the stock engine. I don't necessarily want to do all the hands on work, I just want to understand in detail what changes made to the car. Anyone know of any good mechanic schools?
