Where is Chilliwack? Country? State?

If you have Maaco collision centers there you can get better than rattle can results for less than $300.

There are several other posts that are related to this idea. Please do a search and read those first.

Good luck.

I've heard the same thing from others on the board about the BC Maaco. Sorry that did not help.

There are others in your area that are looking for the same thing. Read the other posts and maybe you guys can help eachother out.

The number of BC 924 guys is starting to impress me. It's like the Hot Bed for North America.

Xeno-- Just park your car in front of Joe's house over night. He can't resist spraying paint at 924's!

I had an MG painted by Maaco a long time ago. They did a good job. They just paint what you bring them. Give them a well prepped base and the paint should come out nice.

I have painted many times by rattlecan, and recently had my racecar shot white by Maaco here near Detroit.

Rattlecan - doesn't hold up worth a damn, does't have the durability, isn't hard enough. The blue and red (other than the mirrors - those are powdercoated Guards Red) on my car are Krylon and Rustoleum, respectively. They will actually wipe right off with paint thinner; regular automotive grade spray cans aren't that bad, I think.

Carrera's completely right, IMO, about MAACO; totally dependant on what you give them. We had the $300 paint job, shot of primer and then paint. It was actually a bit of an experiment for me, and very instructive. There were different areas on the car prepped to different levels; some untouched, some completely repaired from crash damage and nice and smooth (bare bondo), and some just roughed up. I had been told that we needed to rough up the existing paint for new paint to stick.

I found the result was very nice and smooth where we had done all that work (bare bondo), but there seemed to be spots where the paint interacted with the bondo and textured/wrinkled. Areas we had not touched at all looked great. Areas where I had sanded - well, I used a pretty heavy grit, and did not go back and smooth it down, so the last sanding it saw was probably 60 grit, or maybe 80. The scratch marks came through; I thought they'd be filled by primer more. Next time I would make sure they were sanded down to about 400 grit or better, maybe as good as 1000.

There were also some problem areas where we said F-it, need the car to hit the track, but would've called for a respray on a street car, like one area where it looked like an air hose touched the partially dried paint.

So, summary, I wouldn't recommend rattle can except as a last-ditch resort. If you can get access to air or electric sander, you can rough-sand the whole car starting at maybe a 200 or 400 grit, work your way up to and finish with a 1000 grit, then have them paint it. Simpy put, you get what you pay for. Cross-shop cost with regular painters/autobody shops, if you bring it in ready to be masked. Two massive advantages we had with MAACO that we needed in our case was speed and drying. They turned it around in about a day and a half - dropped it off at 7AM, picked it up 4PM nexy day. This was critical for us, with a race at the END OF THE WEEK! They also have drying ovens, to bake the paint on quickly. This is why they can paint so quickly; this also means the paint is harder, being baked on, and will hold up much better to dirt, sap, tar, oil, rocks, rubber chunks (tire worms), etc.

The better smoother surface you have going into the paint booth, the better off you're going to be. Plan to pick it up during daylight hours, and inspect every f-ing inch of paint for a good 20 minutes to find problems.

Hope that helps.

Lizard your passion for Porsches is infectious, to say the least... look what you did to me..
Oddly enough, I've not seen another 924 aside from Kenodog's, Lizard's, my own, and some guy driving by with a nice silver 924 na in White Rock.

Jason, welcome to the board!

For the amount that you will pay for a paint job I would like to suggest that you buy a compressor and paint it yourself. You learn how to paint and if you make a mistake you do that part over. You will still have the compressor when you finish. Great item to have.

We painted three of my cars outdoors and they came out very well. Two of them were metalics.

Ditto the comment to park the car overnight at Joe's house. Reminds me of the comments that were made while in the army.

If it moves salute it
If it does not move paint it
Forgot the third one

I know of 3 other 924s in my little area of 50,000 people, and I've just been informed there is a third for sale that is in mint condition, being sold by an older gent who has only driven it in the summer. Might be a good buy for me

I've recently bought an older Rabbit GTi for a beater, and have been lurking on a VW board with technical concerns and I stumbled across this thread. Rattlecan jobs can look quite nice if done well, but Vaughan is right, it doesn't last. This guy clearcoated his, so it might turn out better in the end. The overall cost was $150 or so he says. He's also in Maple Ridge, so if you want to go check out the car for yourself, it's not that far, and he might even be willing to help you paint your car.

as an automotive painter, i feel that there are a few things you should consider first...

how good do you want it to look? in auto-painting, you really get what you pay for, maaco does some of the worst prepping, i've seen cars where they got overspray on the exhaust (just need a little paper and tape to cover), wheels (wheel covers are pretty cheap), and suspension pieces. i've also heard rumors that they use vaseline to mask off small parts like door locks, and i for one would never apply a petroleum product to a job i was about to paint.

how long do you want it to last? i only paint with House of Kolor, or PPG products, because it's been my experience that they are both reputable, and high quality product lines. it's not uncommon to see cars with orange peel, light paint, or too much/little clear coat. these are caused by low quality products, poor prep work, or inexperienced painters.

how mcuh work do you want to do? most any auto body garage will discount the price of a job depending on the amount of body work and surface prep you do before delivering it to them. however, these guys are "trained" professionals, and would "probably" do a better job of getting the car ready to paint.

painting a car yourself is not impossible, but there is some start up fees to consider as well as if you have the time/space to do it. and there is a learning curve to painting, i've seen high school kids pick it up in under a week, and i've seen guys with 5 years experience who IMO murder the paint jobs on cars they work on. the best advice i can give is, take it slow and keep everything clean (workspace, spray gun, vehicle to be sprayed) and when in doubt ask for help. also, a paint job can only look as good as the prep work that went into it.

good luck.

the big thing that sticks out here that ive ran into is the amount of paint
get more than you need maybe the double the amount because youll get really good coverage that way. ppg is spendy house color is good dupont centari is ok. Though for the clear if you choose a good one and dont spare any exspense your paint job will last longer..
