Hi Guys,

Disconnected the existing cable from alt B+ and ran my test cable from there to battery +.

Alternator/battery light does not light up with engine off, engine on or engine running.

If you have a voltmeter, check to see if the alt's putting out >13V+.
Also - did you verify that the D+ wire (also on back of the alt) is connected? The D+ wire serves as "exciter wire" and it also lights the dashboard light. 12v+ should come from the battery to light the light when ignition's switched on and engine's not running. That 12V+ also serves as exciter current to post D+ to start the alternator charging. Once the alternator starts charging, it sends 12V+ back via D+ through the exciter wire in the other direction - so then you have ~12V+ coming from the battery and ~12V+ coming through the wire in the opposite direction from the alternators' D+, the light goes out due to no difference in potential on both sides of its' filament.
Long story short - you should see the generator light when ignition's on and engine not running. -And if the bulb is burnt out, exciter current won't get to D+ to initiate charging by the alternator.

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you,

Haveing checked t he cable from battery to alternator, it was wasted, the movement must have finished it off.

Replaced it thinking that the problem was resolved,
wasnt.....had the alternator re-checked and it was well and truely knackered, l reckon the first refurbishment job done was a con, but thats in the past.....

Managed to get hold of a new one, totally by accident and that resolved that problem,

cheers for all your input,

knackered [from knacker] adj :
tired, dead tired, worn out, “I’m bloody knackered”, also broken beyond repair, “that car’s knackered”, syn.

I originally typed in completely shagged and then changed it to knackered.......

Knackered - okay its a horse (power) thing, ye olde knacker used to purchase clapped out horses in his knackers yard (scrap yard) and sell them on for refurbishment, although l think they were refurbed as glue ect.......

Nothing changes really, breeds come and go, the knackers yard still waits for all things............

My problem, the knacker was disguised as a mechanic

Yep, tired, worn out, knacked, useless.................

Maybe should have run with completely shagged....or ...fubar

All these technical terms frighten me

have an incredibly good day
