they basically buy one that runs fine and needs some body work, and they shine it up, do some routine maintenance and then flip it for a couple extra bucks (pounds, whatever)

okay, i must be measuring the wrong thing. I thought both wires went in to the 2-wire connection.

what I did with the connector was take it apart, solder new terminals on, and then had them plugged in individually. they are clean and plenty tight. i just wish the original connector hadn't crumbl ...
