yah, its probably the combination of cranking and very old nuts, a pretty stupid and frustrating mistake.
tried more leverage and a (hand-held) impact driver to no avail. will try nut splitter ton ... |

| gotcha, that makes sense. luckily i'm very spoiled and just so happen to have a waterjet, some aluminum sheet stock, and a metal brake handy! can post my model and cutfile once i get it all mocked up. |
