How hard are the adjustment knobs to get to on the QA1s when they're installed? It looks from the pictures like they'd be concealed in the pocket of the lower mount.

You should always unplug all electronics when welding on a car.
That said - I'd expect you have bad grounds, at least check that first.

There are at least 5 ways of doing the brakes. Two hydroboosts, (ATE/BMW & Bendix) two non power assisted and one using an electric booster.
