My old fuel lines are steel lines connected to plastic hoses w outer isolation of rubber (as can be seen in the earlier photo above).

To clarify: all 4 lines plus the return line are of this type. Inner hose made of rigid plastic (polyamide) and outer hose made of rubber. The rubber is totally rotten, but ... |

The timing belt tensioner is brand new, installed a couple of months ago. OEM stuff and carefully installed so I doubt things started with that one breaking.

Yeah, didnt mean that the hanger itself hit the timing belt but that the increased vibrations due to abscence of the damper caused the belt to cut against the rim of the timing belt cover.
