I recently bought a box of parts from a Porsche dealer. It also contained an original 4-speed shift knob.

I had the same problem until I realised that I used the wrong mark on the cam wheel (it is on the backside of the wheel!). For some reason there is also a mark on the front of my cam wheel.

You would like to have a spark BEFORE BDP! So -3 will be 3 degrees before BDP, so before the 0 mark on the flywheel.

I have a '87 951 and a '84 924.

The 951 is a superior car, but way more expensive to drive. The fuel consumption is enormous in comparison to the 924.
