I did a quick test drive after bleeding, adjusting and tugging on some of the suspension. I did not hear anything while it was on the stands.

I believe the '79 has an "x" connection - front rt. with rear left and visa versa

I did find some older posts on here that used a passat set-up I will check the other ...

I replaced the rubber with the braided hoses - I think a year or 2 ago - does not mean it could not fail - I had hoped at the time that it would be better. I will try the other thing ...

how bad/involved is that? would it have to come all the way out or just lowered a little?

as bad as it sounds that may become an option - I don't know how accessible that ball cap on the shift lev ...
